Digital Media in Latinx & Latin America

This year’s preconference aims to examine the production, distribution, and consumption of digital media in Latinx and Latin America. In doing so, we have broadened the scope to include digital media practices of the Latinx diasporic experience, to create a platform that can showcase the richness of a wider variety of relevant research about the Latinx and Latin American experience.
This year’s preconference is being supported / co-sponsored by multiple divisions such as the Communication & Technology Division, the Ethnicity & Race in Communication Division, the Global Communication and Social Change Division, the Intercultural Communication Division, the Journalism Studies Division, and the Political Communication Division. We hope that this event will continue the path started by the first Digital Journalism in Latin America preconference at ICA 2019, and the second Digital Media in Latin America preconference at ICA 2020, and solidify the foundation to institutionally expand the global footprint of ICA.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the second edition of our preconference had to be moved entirely online. However, we were able to organize four live Q&A panels with a total of 14 accepted video presentations, with a keynote by Dr. Ingrid Bachmann. Highlights: inaugural preconference
The story of our preconferences began at ICA 2019, organized by Dr. Pablo J. Boczkowski and Dr. Eugenia Mitchelstein. Under the auspice of Dr. Silvio Waisbord, who served as our inaugural keynote speaker, more than 30 scholars from around the world met to discuss issues about Digital Journalism in Latin America.
